“Beautiful Girl”, released in 1990 by Jose Mari Chan.
I was 13 and ballads ruled. Beautiful Girl was the accepted `I like you, do you like me?’ music during the time and girls pretty much swooned when the radio stations played it. And played it, they did. This song ruled the airwaves in 1990.
To my recollection, 13 was the beginning of the Age of Confusion, when it came to the opposite sex. No one had any wooing technique, you didn’t know how to tell the other person that you liked them without being laughed at by your peers and in the instance when you’ve both sort of agreed that you liked one another (maybe), you still didn’t dare to use the phrase `He/She’s my boyfriend/girlfriend’.
Valentine’s that year, this song was among several in a mixed tape that an admirer gave me. Admittedly, he didn’t even dare call himself an admirer and this tape wasn’t a Valentine’s day gift. Instead, according to him, it was entirely coincidence that he had an extra mixed tape hanging around and thought that I would like it and oh, was it Valentine’s?
This song and other songs during that time from the likes of Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (when they were still with Stock, Aitken and Waterman) makes me laugh and remember the times when the most trying moments in my life then was wondering whether the person I liked, liked me back eventhough they gave me a mixed tape filled with romantic ballad during Valentine’s.

That’s really sweet. I was homeschooled during my 13th year, so the song of my life back then was “Do It Again” by the Kinks… my father found out I had bought “To the Bone” and was so excited we listened to it every day on the road (a full year, basically!)

Alex, I have not heard of this song before but I’m gonna look it up on Spotify. Isn’t it strange? At that age, when we like a song, it’s on repeat, like, forever! 😀
